Two girls reported missing in Meru County have been rescued in Mashuuru, Kajiado County, following what the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) described as a coordinated intelligence-led operation.
According to the DCI, the girls disappeared from their homes on separate occasions, prompting concern among their families.
The matter was first reported at Kariene Police Station before investigators from DCI Imenti Central took over the case and launched investigations.
The agency said detectives worked alongside officers from CRIB and DCI Mashuuru to trace the girls to a house in Moi Township, Mashuuru.
The DCI alleged that the girls were rescued "just moments before they were about to be ferried across the Kenya–Tanzania border."
Police said three people were arrested during the operation. The suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue and are expected to be processed before being presented in court.
One of the suspects is also alleged to have been in Kenya without valid immigration documents.
The DCI said the girls are undergoing medical examinations and assessments by the Children's Officer as investigators seek to establish the full circumstances surrounding their disappearance.
In a statement, the DCI thanked members of the public for providing information that it said helped investigators locate the girls.
"The DCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to the vigilant members of the public whose invaluable information played a crucial role in this successful operation," the agency said.
Investigations remain ongoing as detectives continue gathering evidence to determine what transpired before the girls were found in Kajiado County.
The DCI has not announced any charges, and the allegations against the suspects are yet to be tested in court.
