President William Ruto has congratulated Andy Burnham on his appointment as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, expressing confidence that Kenya and the UK will deepen their long-standing bilateral ties under his leadership.
Ruto wished Burnham success as he assumes office, describing his appointment as the culmination of a distinguished career in public service.
The President said Burnham's commitment to practical, people-centred leadership resonates with Kenya's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
"On behalf of the people and government of the Republic of Kenya, I wish you every success as you assume this important responsibility. Your appointment is the culmination of a distinguished record of public service and a steadfast commitment to practical, people-centred leadership, values that align closely with Kenya's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda," Ruto said.
The president added that he looks forward to working closely with the new UK government to strengthen cooperation in key sectors.
"I look forward to working closely with your government to deepen our long-standing and mutually beneficial partnership and expand cooperation in trade and investment, green growth, innovation, security and other shared priorities," he said.
Ruto said Kenya remains committed to strengthening its enduring friendship with the United Kingdom and creating greater opportunities and shared prosperity for citizens of both countries.
Andy Burnham will become the UK's prime minister today, replacing Keir Starmer.
Starmer will deliver his final address as PM shortly before he and Burnham visit King Charles in Buckingham Palace.
The new prime minister will then give his own speech in Downing Street – he will promise "more breathing room" for Britain while arguing for more "stable and responsible" politics.
Burnham became Labour leader on Friday.
Once Burnham is in office, he will begin hiring and firing ministers – prison minister Lord Timpson resigned this morning.
Downing Street is packed with media this morning ahead of the change of prime ministers.
Extra safety measures have been put into place, including metal barriers outside the gates of Downing Street and a Metropolitan Police ban on using loudspeakers in the area.
The former Greater Manchester mayor will become prime minister later today but will not face MPs until September, when the Commons returns from its six-week recess, unless he decides to recall Parliament.
