Tragedy struck at a school after an eight-year-old Grade Three pupil died when a dry tree branch fell on her as she was having lunch at a primary school in Kiambaa Sub-County, Kiambu County.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, pupils were seated under a tree within the school compound during the lunch break when a dry branch suddenly broke off and struck the child on the head.
Teachers and school staff rushed the child to Karuri Level IV Hospital for emergency treatment, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police officers visited both the school and the hospital.
According to investigators, the child had sustained a severe head injury. The body was transferred to Nazareth Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
In a separate incident, detectives launched a murder investigation after the body of a 19-year-old Tanzanian woman was found in a banana plantation along the Rosslyn-Gigiri border in Kiambaa Sub-County, Kiambu County.
The body was discovered on Tuesday afternoon by a woman who had gone to her banana farm, prompting a report to Rweno Police Station.
Police officers visited the scene and identified the deceased as a Tanzanian national who worked as a casual labourer at a residence in the Hollyway area of Ruaka. Police said she had been living with her aunt in the Slaughter area of Ruaka.
According to police, the woman was last seen alive on Sunday, July 12, at about 5 p.m. when she left her place of work.
A preliminary examination revealed bruises on her face, although investigators said they found no signs of a struggle at the scene.
Police are investigating the possibility that the woman was killed elsewhere before her body was transported and abandoned in the banana plantation.
Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) personnel from Kiambu processed and documented the scene before the body was moved to Kihara Level IV Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding her death and identify those responsible.
