Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has cautioned political leaders against using young people to settle political scores.

Speaking during a funeral, Omollo warned that the practice fuels violence, destroys property and can lead to the loss of lives.

He said Kenya has recently witnessed worrying incidents where youths have been drawn into political confrontations, urging leaders to exercise restraint and keep young people out of political disputes.

"We have faced a challenge regarding the security of our young people, and I want to appeal to our leadership not to use our youth to settle political scores," he said.

The PS warned that political incitement often leaves young people bearing the greatest consequences, while those behind the violence escape unscathed.

"These actions can lead to tragic consequences, including the loss of lives and the destruction of property," Omollo added.

His remarks come amid increased incidents of violence during political activities over recent times, prompting renewed calls for peaceful engagement among rival camps.

Omollo stressed that political competition should never come at the expense of the safety and well-being of the youth, adding that leaders have a responsibility to promote peace and lawful conduct.

He also challenged young people to reject attempts by politicians to recruit or manipulate them into violent activities, urging them to make independent decisions rather than becoming tools in political contests.

"To the young people, I want to challenge and encourage you not to allow yourselves to be used by any leader," he said.

The interior PS urged young people to express their political differences peacefully by steering clear of events organised by leaders they do not support, rather than resorting to confrontation.

"If there is a leader you do not like, simply avoid their functions and instead attend events held by those you do align with," Omollo said.

This is not the first time the leader has made such an appeal.

Earlier in April, the PS issued a warning against using the boda boda sector for violence or political manipulation, urging riders to resist being drawn into destructive activities.

“We must say no to violence. Do not allow yourselves to be used by any individual or politician to cause chaos. This sector must remain focused on lawful and productive work,” he warned.

On youth empowerment, the PS underscored the government’s commitment to expanding opportunities while discouraging exploitation of young people for narrow interests.

“Our youth are a critical national resource. We must support them with opportunities, not expose them to exploitation or misuse,” he stated.
