Democratic Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau has expressed confidence in winning the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election after casting his ballot at AIC Comprehensive School polling station in Ol Kalou town.
Douglas arrived at the polling centre at about 10.20 am, accompanied by Nyandarua Senator John Methu and Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara.
He was received by a large crowd of supporters who cheered as he made his way into the polling station to vote.
His arrival came moments after Nyandarua Governor Badilisha Kiarie had cast his ballot at the same polling station.
Shortly after voting, Douglas praised the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for what he described as a smooth and efficient voting process.
"I have just cast my vote, and I am very happy with the speed at which the IEBC is working," he said.
The DCP candidate said he had toured several polling stations across the constituency and was impressed by the voter turnout.
"I have visited several polling stations. The turnout is in large numbers," he said.
Douglas, however, noted that there had been minor challenges during the opening of polling stations.
"There were just a few hitches in the morning where some of our agents were asked to provide copies of their IDs, but the issue was resolved," he said.
He commended the security arrangements put in place for the by-election, saying the exercise had remained peaceful.
"Other than that, security is tight, and people have come out in large numbers," Douglas added.
The candidate urged residents who had not yet voted to turn out in large numbers, insisting that every vote would make a difference in determining the election's outcome.
"I want to encourage all voters to continue coming out because every vote counts," he said.
Douglas also exuded confidence that his campaign had resonated with voters and expressed optimism that he would emerge victorious.
"I have done my campaign well. The numbers are good, and the margin between us and those we are competing against is wide," he said.
Nyandarua Senator John Methu, who accompanied Douglas to the polling station, also expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election.
"We are here to accompany our candidate. So far, the process is satisfying and we cannot say we have witnessed any major issues," Methu said.
He described the voter turnout as one of the highest he had witnessed in the area and encouraged more residents to cast their ballots.
"This is one of the highest turnouts I have seen. The process is quite fast, and the only appeal is for more voters to come out," he added.
Earlier, Nyandarua Governor George "Badilisha" Kiarie commended residents for maintaining peace during the election.
"Today is a big day in Ol Kalou. Citizens have come out in large numbers and in peace, and the elections are continuing as scheduled. We thank them for maintaining peace and pray it continues until the exercise is concluded," the governor said.
AIC Comprehensive School recorded a high voter turnout, with residents lining up in various classrooms converted into polling stations to exercise their democratic right as voting continued peacefully under the watch of security officers.
