The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) is set to hold a nationwide march to demand justice for two advocates who were killed, in what the society says is a stand against growing threats to members of the legal profession.
The planned procession follows an announcement by LSK President Charles Kanjama declaring July 10 a day of national solidarity for advocates across the country.
In a statement, Kanjama said attacks targeting lawyers undermine the administration of justice and the rule of law, calling for urgent action to ensure the safety of legal practitioners.
In Nairobi, advocates will gather at the Milimani Law Courts parking grounds from 9.00 am, with the march scheduled to begin at 9.30 am.
Participants have been asked to dress in formal attire and wear purple ribbons as a symbol of remembrance and unity.
Similar marches are expected to take place simultaneously in all LSK regional branches under the coordination of branch leadership.
The Nairobi procession will move peacefully from the Milimani Law Courts to the National Police Service headquarters, where the society intends to present a petition to the Inspector-General of Police.
Through the petition, LSK will demand swift investigations into the killings of the two advocates and call for enhanced measures to guarantee the safety and security of lawyers as they carry out their professional duties.
Nyota second phase rollout
The government is set to roll out the second phase of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (Nyota) Business Support Programme, extending financial support to more than 122,000 young entrepreneurs across the country.
The nationwide rollout will take place in 18 venues, bringing together beneficiaries from all 47 counties as the programme enters its next phase.
Under the second disbursement, the government will inject Sh3.06 billion into the initiative, benefiting 122,203 youth-led businesses.
The allocation represents an increase from the Sh2.28 billion disbursed during the programme's first phase, which supported 121,800 young entrepreneurs.
The Nyota programme aims to empower young people through business grants, enabling them to start, expand and sustain enterprises while creating employment opportunities.
