Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School in Bobasi Constituency, Kisii County, has been closed indefinitely following student unrest linked to the appointment of a new principal.
The unrest erupted after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) posted a new head teacher to replace the outgoing principal, David Ogega, who recently retired.
The incoming principal had been serving at a neighbouring secondary school within the locality.
The disturbance disrupted normal learning, prompting the school administration to suspend classes and send students home as authorities moved to restore calm.
Police officers responded to the incident and have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the unrest.
Following the unrest, Kisii County Director of Education Philip Chirchir, accompanied by senior security officials, visited the school to inspect the damage and establish what triggered the disturbance.
After the assessment, education authorities ordered the indefinite closure of the school and directed all students to return home as investigations continue.
The closure comes just days before the scheduled end-of-term examinations, raising concerns over possible disruption to the academic programme.
Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School, which is among the top-performing institutions in the region, had only days earlier celebrated the retirement of longtime principal David Ogega, honouring him on June 30 for his four decades of service in the teaching profession.
The closure comes amid growing concern over a recent wave of student unrest that has affected schools across the country, forcing several institutions to suspend learning.
