Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's meeting with opinion leaders from Gichugu Constituency on Sunday was not only marked by political discussions but also by a cultural moment that quickly caught public attention—his decision to drink from a traditional calabash.

The meeting, held as part of Gachagua's ongoing consultations on what he describes as the "liberation of the country" and the formation of the "Sixth Administration," took a distinctly cultural turn when the former Deputy President was served a traditional drink in a calabash.

Images from the meeting showed Gachagua comfortably sipping from the calabash while listening to a speaker dressed in traditional attire, as elders and local opinion leaders looked on.

The scene reflected a blend of politics and cultural heritage, underscoring the importance many Kenyan communities attach to traditional customs during leadership engagements.

Although Gachagua did not specifically explain the significance of drinking from the calabash, the gesture is widely recognised in many Kenyan communities as part of welcoming visitors, honouring guests and celebrating cultural identity.

It is often associated with hospitality and respect for tradition.

The cultural display complemented Gachagua's message about his long-standing connection with Gichugu.

"Gichugu Constituency in Kirinyaga county is my second home. I spent nine years of my early life; six years at Kianyaga High School from Form One to Six and three years as a District Officer," Gachagua said.

He added that he was honoured to receive the delegation as consultations on the country's political future continue.

"I was humbled this morning to receive a high-powered delegation of respected opinion leaders from Gichugu as part of the ongoing consultations on the liberation of our country and the formation of the Sixth Administration. Consultations continue. God Bless Kenya."

The calabash moment has since attracted attention on social media, where supporters described it as a demonstration of Gachagua's appreciation of local traditions.

While the meeting's primary agenda remained political consultations ahead of the 2027 General Election, the cultural exchange provided one of the day's most memorable images.

For Gachagua, whose recent engagements have increasingly featured grassroots leaders and community elders, the event illustrated how cultural traditions continue to feature prominently in Kenya's political landscape, where leaders often use local customs to connect with communities while advancing their political message.
