The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has announced plans to conduct nationwide grassroots elections at the ward level as it moves to strengthen its grassroots structures ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement, the party said the exercise will be overseen by the UDA National Elections Board (NEB) and will mark another significant milestone in strengthening the Party's grassroots structures.
The ward-level elections follow the completion of polling centre grassroots elections, which the party described as "the successful and most elaborate grassroots elections ever conducted at the polling centre level."
According to UDA, more than 543,000 party officials were elected during the polling centre exercise.
The party said members in every polling centre elected 20 representatives drawn from different interest groups. These include three farmers, four representatives of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), three professionals, two members, three religious representatives, four youth representatives and one representative of Special Interest Groups (SIGs).
UDA said the 20 elected officials from each polling centre will now constitute the electoral college responsible for electing the Ward Congress in each of the country's 1,450 wards.
The National Elections Board, chaired by Anthony Mwaura, said the exercise is anchored in the UDA Party Constitution and is intended to strengthen the party's grassroots operational structures.
"The process, anchored in the UDA Party Constitution, is designed to strengthen the Party's grassroots operational architecture ahead of the 2027 General Election," the party said.
UDA also announced that the board has developed mechanisms to address what it described as the unique democratic dynamics of the North Eastern region during the constitution of the party's grassroots structures.
According to the party, the measures are intended to ensure "an inclusive and representative electoral process."
The meeting was chaired by Anthony Mwaura and attended by the board's Vice Chairperson, Nominated MP Ali Abdisirat Khalif, alongside other members of the National Elections Board.
The party did not announce the dates when the ward-level grassroots elections will be conducted.
