Police in Kayole are investigating the theft of Sh470,000 from a locked pickup shortly after the owner withdrew the money from a bank in Buruburu, Nairobi.

According to police, the incident occurred on Tuesday at about 12:30 pm, after the victim withdrew money and drove his Isuzu D-Max pickup to Kayole Junction.

The victim told police he parked the vehicle at a petrol station and left the cash hidden behind the driver's seat while he went shopping at a nearby supermarket.

He later withdrew an additional Sh30,000 from an M-Pesa outlet before returning to the vehicle.

On his return, he found the driver's door open and the Sh470,000 missing.

CCTV footage retrieved from the petrol station is said to show a vehicle believed by investigators to have followed the victim from the bank.

The footage is reported to show individuals opening the driver's door and taking the cash before driving away.

Police are pursuing the possibility that those involved had prior knowledge that the victim was carrying the cash.

Police said they are seeking to establish whether anyone had been monitoring customers and transactions before trailing him and stealing the money.

Police said previous investigations into similar incidents have indicated that some criminal groups monitor customers at banking halls before targeting them later. They added that investigations have also pointed to possible insider involvement in some cases.

Detectives are investigating the latest incident amid what police say is a rise in similar cases and have advised banks to strengthen measures aimed at preventing such thefts.

Meanwhile, police in Bungoma County are searching for a suspect in connection with the fatal assault of his neighbour following a domestic dispute in Bungoma South Sub-County.

According to police, the incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, June 28, at Thooma Village in Mechimeru Location, where 41-year-old Nickson Barasa is reported to have sustained a head injury inflicted with a machete during a confrontation with a neighbour identified by police as Ishmael Kundu.

The victim was rushed to Mechimeru Model Health Centre, where he received first aid before being referred to Bungoma County Referral Hospital for specialised treatment. However, he died while undergoing treatment.

Police officers visited and documented the scene as part of the investigation.

The body was moved to Bungoma County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The suspect is reported to have fled and remains at large as police continue investigations and efforts to trace and arrest him.
