Detectives have arrested eight suspects as investigations intensify into a series of highway robberies targeting courier companies and vehicles transporting goods across several parts of the country.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the operation was conducted by officers drawn from the headquarters-based Operation Action Team (OAT), the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB), and detectives from the DCI Nakuru Regional Office.
Police said the arrests follow investigations into multiple robbery incidents reported at various stations.
Authorities said the incidents involved theft of goods in transit valued at millions of shillings and affected courier operators and transport businesses.
"These incidents have resulted in the loss of millions worth of goods in transit belonging to innocent Kenyans and have been reported at various police stations, including Mai Mahiu, Kipkelion, Londiani, and Nakuru," the agency stated.
In a statement, DCI said investigators had uncovered what they described as an organised criminal network believed to comprise about 15 members and linked through forensic investigations to several reported incidents.
According to detectives, the group allegedly operated by impersonating government enforcement officers and intercepting vehicles transporting cargo.
Police alleged that members of the syndicate posed as officers attached to investigative and revenue agencies and conducted what appeared to be inspections while equipped with communication gadgets associated with law enforcement and armed.
"This notorious syndicate boasts networks in both Nairobi and Kisumu, employing a strategy that involves masquerading as DCI and KRA officers conducting inspections, while equipped with police radio calls and armed," the statement said.
The suspects are alleged to have stopped vehicles transporting goods before escorting them to isolated locations where the cargo would allegedly be transferred into waiting vehicles.
Authorities said the operation leading to the arrests was coordinated after investigators developed leads connecting the suspects to the reported robberies.
During the operation, police recovered items they said were linked to the alleged activities, including communication equipment and vehicles believed to have been used during the commission of the offences.
Six of the eight suspects have since been presented before the Nakuru Law Courts, where they denied the charges.
The court released them on a bond of Sh250,000 each and scheduled the matter for mention on July 13, 2026.
Two other suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court on June 29, 2026.
The arrests mark a significant development in investigations into highway-related robberies that have affected the movement of commercial goods and courier operations.
However, detectives said investigations remain active, and efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest additional individuals believed to be connected to the alleged criminal network.
"Meanwhile, detectives continue to pursue additional leads to trail and apprehend other members of the syndicate who remain at large," DCI noted.
The authorities appealed to members of the public to share information that may assist ongoing investigations, assuring that reports can be made anonymously through established reporting channels.
