Businesses remained closed and roads largely deserted at the Ruiru-Kimbo stage on Thursday as heightened security measures marked the first anniversary of Gen Z protests.

A spot check at the busy trading centre showed most shops closed, with traders opting to stay away amid fears of possible unrest and looting during the demonstrations commemorating the June 25, 2025 protests.

Police officers maintained patrols along key roads in the area, while movement remained minimal compared to normal business days.

The usually bustling Ruiru-Kimbo stage recorded low activity as many residents chose to remain indoors.

Several roads around the trading centre were either closed or experienced restricted movement as security personnel monitored the situation.

Despite the subdued atmosphere, a few boda boda operators were seen waiting for customers at the stage, hoping to earn an income amid the slowdown in business activities.

However, passenger numbers remained low as many residents avoided unnecessary travel.

At least a dozen activists were arrested outside Parliament Buildings and Nairobi CBD as they gathered to mark the second anniversary of the June 25 Gen Z protests.

The police said they were questioning the group about their activities.

Nairobi police boss Issa Mohamud said they had detained the group at various police stations.

“I don’t know how many there are, but we have some people in custody for questioning,” he said.

He told those planning protests to keep off even as he defended the move to block major roads to the city centre.

“We were sieving thieves and crooks who were planning to cause chaos in the city. We did this for the sake of our country,” he said.
