Thousands of Kenyans are expected to take part in memorial processions and demonstrations across the country today to mark the anniversary of the June 25 anti-government protests.
The activities, largely organised by Gen Z activists and civil society groups, are aimed at commemorating those who lost their lives during last year's demonstrations while renewing calls for accountability and reforms.
Human rights organisations, including the Law Society of Kenya and the Police Reforms Working Group, have urged the National Police Service to facilitate peaceful demonstrations and ensure the safety of protesters, journalists, medics and human rights observers.
The groups issued a seven-point advisory reminding police that the right to assemble, demonstrate and present petitions is protected under Article 37 of the Constitution.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said the government respects the constitutional right to peaceful assembly and that police are prepared to provide security and guide demonstrators.
“Police are therefore ready to provide security and guide the protesters tomorrow according to their request,” Murkomen said ahead of the demonstrations.
Meanwhile, Kenyatta National Hospital has directed consultants and senior house officers on call to remain available to respond to emergencies that may arise during the demonstrations, citing the need for uninterrupted emergency services.
Several political leaders have also weighed in ahead of the protests. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has pledged legal assistance to any protesters who may be arrested during the demonstrations, saying a team of advocates has been assembled to provide representation.
The commemorations come amid heightened public attention on the events of June 25, 2024, when nationwide protests against the Finance Bill culminated in demonstrators breaching Parliament grounds, triggering a political moment that reshaped public discourse and youth activism in Kenya.
