President William Ruto, accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, on Monday launched the nationwide Coffee Revival Programme in Kianyaga, Kirinyaga county, in a move aimed at revitalising the sector and increasing farmers’ earnings.
The programme forms part of the government’s agricultural reforms targeting improved coffee production, fair returns for farmers and elimination of exploitative practices in the coffee value chain.
Speaking during the launch at General Kassam Stadium, Ruto said reforms introduced in the sector, including streamlining licensing, were beginning to bear fruit, with farmers receiving improved payments for their produce.
The government is also rolling out 20 million coffee seedlings through the New Kenya Planters Cooperative Union (New KPCU) as part of efforts to increase national production to 150,000 metric tonnes by 2029.
The programme further includes debt relief measures and minimum guaranteed returns aimed at protecting smallholder farmers from market fluctuations and restoring profitability in the sector.
