The National Police Service has arrested 56 suspects following violent disturbances that erupted on June 19, 2026, during a public event in Kuresoi North Sub-County, Nakuru County.
The event was attended by senior government officials, county leaders and members of the public.
The National Police Service said all 56 suspects remain in custody as investigations continue into the incident.
Officers also recovered several exhibits from the suspects, which are believed to have been used during the disturbances.
The service said it has launched investigations into the violence and is examining the recovered exhibits and other evidence to establish what happened and who was responsible.
It added that it remains committed to conducting thorough investigations and ensuring those found culpable are held accountable in accordance with the law.
Police spokesman Michael Muchiri said teams in the area were looking for more suspects.
The arrest came after at least three people were shot and injured when violence broke out at the event.
The three victims, who sustained gunshot wounds to their hands and legs, were rushed to Molo Level 4 Hospital, where they were receiving treatment.
Police said investigations are underway to establish who fired the shots.
One of the victims, Job Kiprono, who was shot in the right hand, thanked members of the public for rescuing him and ensuring he received prompt medical attention.
The violence also left a trail of destruction, with at least three vehicles, including one belonging to MP Alfred Mutai, vandalised by rival groups.
A bus was torched as youths armed with stones and sticks engaged in running battles around the venue.
Despite the violence, the empowerment event later resumed under heavy police security.
Local leaders condemned what they described as rising political intolerance in Kuresoi North, accusing politicians of inciting young people into violent confrontations.
They urged leaders to exercise restraint and called on residents to embrace peaceful political engagement to avert further unrest.
The damaged vehicles were towed to the local police station.
