
A 30-year-old fisherman died after being attacked by a crocodile while fishing at Nanga Beach in Seme subcounty, Kisumu county.
Kennedy Ondijo, was reportedly fishing at the beach on Sunday morning when a crocodile bit him on the right leg.
According to police, Ondijo sustained serious injuries during the attack and was rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.
Despite efforts by medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries at about noon.
His body was later moved to the hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination, police said.
Authorities said officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service stationed at Ndere Island National Park were informed of the incident and are expected to investigate the attack.
The latest tragedy highlights the continued danger faced by communities living and working along the shores of Lake Victoria, where human-wildlife conflicts involving crocodiles remain a recurring concern.
Authorities have repeatedly urged fishermen and residents to exercise caution when operating in areas known to be inhabited by the reptiles.
Elsewhere, police in Sipili, Laikipia county, police are investigating a suspected murder incident following the discovery of a male body lying along the roadside at Mugeko area near Sipili trading centre on June 13.
A boda boda rider stated that he was ferrying a pillion passenger from Kinamba trading centre to Ol Moran trading centre when he noticed an unidentified male body lying on the right-hand side of the road.
Police officers proceeded to the scene
and confirmed the incident.
Upon arrival, they found the body of a male adult identified as Moses Lodekek, a 48-year-old Turkana man from Mlima Meza and a livestock broker.
The body had visible injuries, including a deep cut wound in the back of the head and a cut wound in the left palm.
Blood was also observed oozing from
the mouth, and the deceased’s jacket appeared torn.
Preliminary assessment suggested that the victim may have been hit by a speeding motor vehicle or motorcycle, although the exact circumstances remain under investigation.
The scene was processed, photographed, and documented by crime scene personnel before the body was moved to Sipili Funeral Home for preservation, pending post-mortem examination.
Police have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of death and identify those responsible.
