Motorists using sections of the Nairobi Expressway will experience a temporary traffic disruption following a planned 24-hour closure.
In a public notice issued on Saturday, Moja Expressway Company announced that some sections of the highway will be closed from 10:00 pm on Saturday, June 13, 2026, to 10:00 pm on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
According to the company, the temporary closure is necessary to allow the installation of fabricated footbridge beams.
"Please note that some sections of the Nairobi Expressway will be temporarily closed for 24hours to allow the installation of the fabricated footbridge beams of the Airtel footbridge across the Expressway carriageway," the notice said.
The closure is expected to affect traffic flow in both directions, prompting motorists to use designated alternative routes during the period.
For motorists travelling toward Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) from the Mlolongo direction, the company advised exiting the expressway through Eastern Bypass Exit A and re-entering through Southern Bypass Entrance A.
Meanwhile, motorists heading toward Mlolongo from the CBD direction have been advised to use Southern Bypass Exit B before rejoining the expressway through Eastern Bypass Entrance B.
The operator urged road users to plan their journeys in advance to minimise inconvenience and avoid delays during the closure period.
The company conveyed apologies for the disruptions expected during the works.
“Sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused, and thank you for choosing the Nairobi Expressway,” the company stated.
The installation forms part of infrastructure works intended to improve pedestrian connectivity and safety along sections of the expressway corridor.
Temporary closures and diversions have previously been implemented during maintenance and construction activities along the route.
Motorists intending to travel during the closure window have been advised to allow additional travel time and familiarise themselves with the diversion routes ahead of departure.
The Nairobi Expressway remains one of the capital’s key transport corridors, connecting Mlolongo to the Westlands area and easing travel through Nairobi by providing an alternative to heavily congested surface roads.
It is a 27-kilometre toll road that also links Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Central Business District heading to Westlands area.
The road was developed under a public-private partnership between the Government of Kenya and Moja Expressway Company.
The elevated highway was officially opened in 2022 and is designed to ease traffic congestion along the busy Mombasa Road–Uhuru Highway corridor.
It features multiple interchanges, entry and exit points, and a cashless tolling system for payments.
The expressway significantly reduces travel time across Nairobi during peak hours.
It also includes infrastructure such as pedestrian footbridges and service lanes to improve safety and traffic flow.
