Human rights activist and presidential aspirant Boniface Mwangi has been elected as the party leader of Ukweli Party.

This follows a National Delegates Conference (NDC) held in Nairobi on Friday.

Mwangi announced his election on his social media platform, noting that party members from across the country travelled to Nairobi to participate in the delegates’ meeting, which culminated in his elevation to the top leadership position.

According to the rights defender, the outcome of the election reflects a collective decision by party members rather than an individual victory.

“This victory is not about one individual. It is about all of us who believe Kenya deserves better,” he stated.

He said the focus now shifts to building a political platform that is inclusive, responsive, and rooted in public service.

"We now have the opportunity to build a party that listens, that includes, and that works for every Kenyan — regardless of where they come from, what they believe, or who they voted for in the past," he said.

Mwangi further emphasised the need for unity and reform-oriented leadership as the party prepares for its national political engagements.

He underscored the importance of institutional development within the party, noting that the next phase would involve strengthening structures, nurturing principled leadership, and restoring public confidence in political institutions.

"The work begins now. We must build strong structures, nurture principled leadership, and restore faith in politics as a force for public service," the leader stated.

Mwangi lauded the participants for taking part in the democratic process, thanking delegates for their support.

“Thank you to every delegate who participated in this democratic process. Thank you for your trust,” he said.

He expressed confidence in the party’s future, calling for unity in building a broad-based political movement.

“Let’s build a party that works for all Kenyans. The journey to liberate our nation continues,” he said.

Mwangi, a long-time activist known for his advocacy on governance and human rights issues, officially declared his intention to contest the presidency in 2027 earlier last year, joining a growing list of aspirants seeking to challenge President William Ruto.

In November 2025, he began nationwide tours aimed at popularising his presidential bid and mobilising financial support for campaign activities.

During the tours, he has called for reforms in governance, accountability, and political inclusivity.

The election to party leadership is expected to provide Mwangi with a formal political vehicle as he seeks to transition from activism into electoral politics.
