‎The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has raised concern over a video circulating on social media allegedly showing the destruction of Giant Lobelias, scientifically known as Lobelia telekii, a rare and ecologically significant plant species found in Kenya’s high-altitude mountain ecosystems.

‎The Service said it has taken note of the footage and has already launched investigations to verify its authenticity, establish where the alleged incident took place, and identify the individuals involved.

Authorities have also indicated that appropriate legal action will be taken should the claims be confirmed.

‎KWS commended members of the public for their vigilance and for reporting the matter, noting that public participation continues to play a key role in wildlife and ecosystem protection across the country.

‎“We appreciate the vigilance of members of the public who brought this matter to our attention and we value the trust placed in the Service’s conservation mandate,” KWS said in a statement.

‎The Giant Lobelia (Lobelia telekii) is one of the most distinctive plant species in Kenya’s afro-alpine zones, thriving in extreme climatic conditions on high-altitude mountains such as Mount Kenya, the Aberdare Range, and Mount Elgon.

The plant is adapted to freezing nighttime temperatures, intense sunlight, and low oxygen conditions typical of these fragile ecosystems.

‎Ecologists note that Giant Lobelias grow slowly and play an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of mountain environments.

They provide microhabitats for insects and other small organisms, contribute to soil stability, and form part of the unique biodiversity that makes Kenya’s alpine landscapes globally significant.

‎KWS emphasised that any destruction or interference with such protected flora constitutes an offence under Kenya’s wildlife and environmental laws.

The agency warned that such acts not only threaten individual species but also undermine broader conservation efforts aimed at preserving fragile ecosystems under increasing pressure from human activity and climate change.

‎“The Service strongly cautions against the destruction or unlawful interference with protected wildlife, plants, and sensitive ecosystems, as such actions threaten Kenya’s natural heritage and ongoing conservation efforts,” KWS stated.

‎The agency further reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Kenya’s biodiversity, adding that it is working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any violations are thoroughly investigated and addressed.

‎Environmental experts have also expressed concern over the circulation of the video, noting that even isolated incidents of habitat destruction can have long-term impacts on slow-growing alpine species.

They have urged the public to respect protected areas and report any suspicious activities to authorities promptly.

‎KWS assured Kenyans that it remains vigilant in protecting the country’s natural heritage and will provide further updates once investigations into the incident are concluded.

‎“We remain committed to safeguarding Kenya’s biodiversity and ensuring that all ecosystems are protected for present and future generations,” the Service added.
