Narcotics drugs recovered from Miwani road accident /HANDOUT

Police officers in Miwani, Kisumu county have recovered a consignment of suspected cannabis sativa following a road traffic accident that occurred along the Chemelil–Miwani–Kisumu Road at Ombeyi Junction on Saturday, June 6.

According to a statement issued by the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Miwani police station responded to reports of a road accident involving a white Mazda CX-5, which had veered off the road and rolled into a ditch.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers established that members of the public had already rescued the occupants of the vehicle. However, the occupants had fled before police officers arrived, raising suspicion about the nature of the goods being transported.

A thorough search and processing of the accident scene led to the discovery of cannabis sativa concealed within the vehicle. The drugs were recovered and secured as exhibits to aid ongoing investigations.

Police subsequently towed the damaged vehicle to Miwani police station, where it remains detained pending further inquiries. Investigators have launched a manhunt for the occupants who escaped from the scene and are working to establish the source and intended destination of the illegal substance.

The National Police Service commended members of the public for their swift action in reporting the accident, noting that public cooperation remains critical in the fight against crime and drug trafficking.

“The service appreciates members of the public who promptly reported the incident and continues to encourage them to share information through the nearest police station or designated emergency channels,” the statement read.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies through emergency numbers 999 and 911 or via the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ toll-free line, #FichuaKwaDCI.

The recovery highlights ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat the trafficking and distribution of narcotic drugs across the country.

Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling criminal networks involved in the illicit drug trade and ensuring safer communities through enhanced surveillance, intelligence gathering, and public collaboration.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
