The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kenya Urban Roads Authority) has announced the partial closure of several major roads in Nairobi to pave the way for ongoing bridge construction works aimed at improving urban mobility and road safety.

The affected roads include Kenyatta Avenue/Valley Road/Jakaya Kikwete Road, Haile Selassie Avenue, and Ngong Road, with diversions expected to last between one week and eight months depending on the location.

KURA said the interventions are part of its broader infrastructure upgrade programme designed to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion in the city.

“We urge motorists to use alternative routes and to follow guide by traffic police and marshals. We apologise for the inconvenience caused as we endeavour to transform urban mobility,” Kura said in a statement.

A section of Kenyatta Avenue/Valley Road/Jakaya Kikwete Road will be partially closed from Friday, June 12, 2026, to Friday, February 12, 2027, for eight months.

The authority said the closure will allow contractors to undertake bridge construction works while ensuring safety for motorists and pedestrians.

Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes as indicated in diversion plans and to follow guidance from traffic police officers and marshals deployed in the area.

A section of Haile Selassie Avenue will also be partially closed from Friday, June 12, 2026, to Monday, October 12, 2026, for four months.

According to KURA, the works are part of ongoing bridge construction activities intended to minimise long-term disruptions once completed.

Road users have been urged to plan their journeys and comply with traffic management directives.

Ngong Road will experience a short-term partial closure from Thursday, June 11, 2026, to Thursday, June 18, 2026, lasting one week.

The closure will facilitate the installation of twin cross culverts along the section between Windy Ridge and Westwood Park Road.

KURA has assured motorists that diversion routes will be clearly marked and managed by traffic police and marshals to reduce inconvenience.

KURA has apologised for any inconvenience caused, noting that the works are necessary to transform urban mobility and improve long-term road infrastructure in Nairobi.

Motorists have been urged to exercise patience, observe traffic instructions, and use alternative routes where possible.

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) is a statutory body established under the Kenya Roads Act, 2007, mandated to manage, develop, rehabilitate, and maintain national trunk roads within urban areas across Kenya.

Headquartered in Nairobi, KURA operates through 10 regional offices strategically positioned to serve all 47 counties, ensuring effective oversight and service delivery nationwide.

Following a road reclassification exercise conducted in January 2016 by the Transition Authority, KURA’s mandate was realigned to reflect the new constitutional framework.

This significantly expanded the Authority’s responsibilities to include the management of all national trunk roads as they traverse urban areas.

KURA currently oversees a road network spanning approximately 4625 kilometre comprising both paved and unpaved roads within urban areas.
