Rwanda has announced a sharp increase in fuel prices, with diesel rising by Sh64 per litre under the latest review issued by the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA).

In a communique released on June 5, 2026, RURA said the maximum retail pump price for diesel has been set at 2,927 Rwandan francs per litre (about Sh258.8), up from the previous level of approximately Sh194.7 per litre.

Petrol prices have also been revised, with the maximum retail price set at 2,938 Rwandan francs per litre (about Sh259.7).

The regulator said the adjustments take effect from June 6, 2026, at 6:00 a.m.

According to RURA, the changes reflect developments in global oil markets as well as supply-side conditions affecting fuel importation and distribution.

The authority noted that international price movements continue to influence domestic pricing across the region, necessitating periodic adjustments.

Despite the increase, the regulator emphasised that government interventions have helped cushion consumers from even higher costs.

"These adjustments reflect developments in international petroleum markets and supply conditions, while taking into account Government measures to safeguard fuel supply and limit the impact on the economy and consumers," the statement by RURA said.

It said state support measures were applied to moderate the impact of global market fluctuations, ensuring that pump prices remain below what would have been dictated purely by market forces.

RURA further stated that these interventions are aimed at stabilising the economy and limiting inflationary pressure on goods and services that depend heavily on fuel.

"This support is intended to cushion transport and freight services and reduce broader economic impacts," the authority highlighted.

The government also maintained that public transport fares will remain unchanged despite the fuel price revision.

It said continued support to transport operators is intended to help absorb the increased fuel costs and ensure that commuters are not immediately affected by fare adjustments.

RURA Director General Rugigana Evariste, in the statement, added that the regulator will continue monitoring regional and global petroleum market trends and take appropriate measures to maintain fair pricing and stable fuel supply across the country.

The latest adjustment comes at a time when fuel prices across the region remain volatile.

In Kenya, for instance, motorists are currently paying Sh214.25 per litre of super petrol and Sh232.86 for diesel in Nairobi, according to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

These prices remain in effect until the next review on June 14, 2026.

Kenya has also experienced recent fluctuations in fuel pricing, with diesel prices rising by Sh46.29 per litre in the May 2026 review before a subsequent reduction of Sh10.06 following public discontent.

Against this backdrop, Rwanda’s latest Sh64 diesel increase underscores the regional impact of global oil market shifts.
