Former Internal Security Minister Abdullahi Mohamed Nor has
welcomed the approval of Somalia’s new National Constitution, calling it a
historic breakthrough in the country’s protracted state-building journey.
In a landmark session, lawmakers in the Federal Parliament
of Somalia completed and passed the revised Constitution, formally ending years
of review, debate, and amendments.
Members of both the House of the People and the Upper House
voted overwhelmingly in favour of the document, a development widely described
by leaders across the political spectrum as foundational to Somalia’s
democratic stability.
Nor, who is also a presidential candidate for Hirshabelle
State and currently serves as a Member of Parliament, described the approval as
a defining moment in Somalia’s pursuit of peace, unity, and stronger
institutions.
“This is a historic moment for our nation, one that moves
Somalia decisively forward in its state-building progress and opens the door to
greater possibilities for all citizens,” Nor said shortly after Parliament
endorsed the Constitution.
His comments reflected a broader national optimism that the
finalised constitutional framework will provide a clearer legal foundation for
governance, reinforce the rule of law, and enhance cooperation between federal
and state institutions after years under a provisional charter.
Nor commended members of both chambers for their dedication
and patriotism in completing the long-awaited process.
“I salute the members of the House of the People and the
Upper House for their diligence and commitment in completing this historic
task,” he said. “Their dedication to this process reflects a shared vision for
a stable, secure, and prosperous Somalia.”
The constitutional review spanned years of negotiations,
consultations, and consensus-building, often under challenging political and
security conditions.
Nor expressed optimism that the new constitutional era will
bring tangible benefits for citizens.
“I hope that this new phase the country has entered will
lead to political stability, lasting security, and sustained economic growth
for every Somali citizen,” he said, adding that successful implementation would
be the true measure of progress.
He also urged leaders at all levels of government to respect
and adhere strictly to the Constitution, noting that its credibility would
depend on collective commitment to justice, accountability, and good
governance.
Speaker Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur confirmed that 186 members
of the House of the People and 37 Senators from the Upper House approved the
Constitution by majority vote, marking what many view as a transformative
chapter in Somalia’s rebuilding process.
