Kenyans turned up in large numbers at Nyayo Stadium on Friday morning as the country prepared to mark its 62nd Jamhuri Day, creating a lively atmosphere despite tight security at all entrances.
Police officers drawn from multiple agencies kept a heavy presence around the stadium, with thorough body checks and strict restrictions barring food and drinks inside.
Emergency teams from AMREF, the Kenya Red Cross and St John Ambulance were already on standby.
Along the walkways, vendors made brisk business selling flags, vuvuzelas, whistles and an assortment of fast foods to the early crowds streaming in.
Many attendees said they hoped President William Ruto would use his address to speak on the rising cost of living and youth empowerment.
Inside the stadium, dignitaries began to arrive, among them MPs, senators, governors and Chief Justice Martha Koome.
Others are Speakers of both houses of Parliament, Cabinet Secretaries, and Attorney General Dorcas Oduor.
President William Ruto is expected to lead the celebrations, with the Ghanaian President attending as the chief guest.
