Uasin Gishu county officials inspecting Shisha smoking equipment seized during an operation

Six individuals were arrested during a crackdown by Uasin Gishu County authorities targeting the sale of illicit alcohol and drugs in Eldoret city.

The operation was conducted by the Directorate of Alcoholic Drinks Control Board (DADB) in collaboration with security officers.

The crackdown took place in the Teleview area along the Eldoret–Kisumu road, close to a school. Authorities expressed concern over the potential exposure of students to harmful substances.

The six were arrested after being found in possession of shisha.

Shisha is a stimulant drug often smoked through a water pipe and contains nicotine along with other chemicals.

The DADB team, led by Director Koiya Arap Maiyo, said the operation targeted establishments operating illegally.

Those arrested were mainly young people, some of whom are believed to be students.

Authorities noted that the suspects were new entrants to the city.

Speaking after the operation, Maiyo commended the officers for their swift action and emphasised the county’s commitment to protecting young people.

“We will not allow dangerous substances to enter our neighbourhoods, learning institutions, or entertainment venues. Our teams remain on high alert, and anyone found selling illegal drinks or drugs will face legal action,” Maiyo said.

He also urged residents to report suspicious activities as the county continues its crackdown during the festive season.

The operation follows concerns raised by Kesses MP, who highlighted the growing abuse of alcohol and drugs, particularly among youth in Eldoret.

The MP encouraged security agencies to take strong action against dealers, noting that the city’s large student population makes it a potential target for illegal operations.

Authorities also expressed concern over the circulation of chemicals used in the production of illicit alcohol and said steps are being taken to address the issue.

Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Edisson Nyale confirmed that security teams are actively monitoring the situation and that some individuals involved in the manufacture and sale of illicit alcohol have already been arrested.

Maiyo added that bars and clubs operating illegally near educational institutions have been closed to ensure schools and colleges remain safe learning environments.
