Police have apologised for what they have called an unfortunate incident in which teargas was thrown at worshippers on Sunday morning in Nairobi’s Kariobangi area.
“The National Police Service (NPS) acknowledges a regrettable incident that occurred early today (Sunday) at the Kariobangi North PCEA church,” Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said in a statement while explaining what triggered the chaos.
According to police, the incident was sparked when rowdy youths armed with crude weapons started to gather around the church as worshippers, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, congregated.
“A celebratory and thanksgiving service was held for the successful ward candidate following the recent by-election. Towards the end of the service, two police officers on security duty noted a large group of rowdy youths, armed with crude weapons, attempting to force their way into the church. They promptly called for reinforcement.”
Nyaga added, “I was further observed that another group of youths approached the scene, apparently to confront the first group. Police moved in quickly to quell the escalating tension, which regrettably spread into the church, temporarily disrupting service.”
Nyaga confirmed that during the chaos, six people sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital, saying that the disturbances appeared both planned and premeditated.
“NPS takes great exception to such callous acts, particularly when directed at a place of worship, which is considered a sanctuary. We also extend our sympathies to the six individuals and wish them a quick recovery,” Nyaga said.
He said that Nairobi Police regional Commander, along Ise the DCI, has been directed to use all available resources to investigate ‘this callous and regrettable incident’ thoroughly.
“The Service also wishes to correct misinformation alleging a tear gas canister was thrown on the church. Church leadership have been contacted and has denied this occurred. The service later resumed and concluded peacefully at 2 pm,” Muchuri said.
