Detectives are investigating an incident in which a group of more than ten men gang-raped a woman and recorded the ordeal in Laare, Meru County.

The police said they had arrested three of the suspects, and efforts to apprehend the other accomplices were ongoing as of Monday.

The group was among approximately 100 men participating in a traditional circumcision procession when they attacked the woman in Laare Town, police said.

The gang assaulted the woman, recorded part of the attack, and shared the footage on social media.

The incident, which occurred on December 1, 2025, has caused an uproar online, with many calling for justice.

Police said they were alerted, responded to the scene, and managed to arrest three suspects. The woman was admitted to a local hospital in a traumatized state.

A team was dispatched to the area to assist in tracking the perpetrators, police said.

Police condemned the incident and pledged to arrest all individuals responsible.

Authorities also reported a surge in rape cases nationwide.

In Syokimau, police said they are pursuing a gang that allegedly raped a woman, her daughter, and their housemaid during an attack at their home.

The gang also stole assorted goods during the Monday morning ordeal. Police said the victims are in stable condition, and the hunt for the attackers is ongoing.

In Moiben, Uasin Gishu County, police reported pursuing a gang that allegedly raped a woman in a maize plantation. The woman was headed home on a motorcycle on the Moiben-Kapcherop highway when the rider diverted from the main road into a maize plantation.

She told police that about ten men were present, and five of them assaulted her. The woman escaped and was assisted by good Samaritans to a hospital. No arrests have been made in this case.

Elsewhere in Kirinyaga, three suspects were arrested in connection with the murder and gang rape of a woman in the area. The woman died as a result of the ordeal on November 22.

Police reiterated that rape incidents have surged in the country and that teams are working diligently to ensure justice for the victims.

In Kenya, the punishment for rape, as defined by the Sexual Offences Act, is imprisonment for a term of not less than 10 years, which can be enhanced to life imprisonment. The specific sentence depends on factors such as the age of the victim and the circumstances of the crime.
