Police in Bungoma have arrested eight individuals and recovered a collection of crude weapons during an intelligence-led operation aimed at enhancing security during today’s by-elections.
The suspects were intercepted in the Sikusi area along the Chwele-Bungoma road.
During a search of the vehicle they were travelling in, officers recovered weapons, including machetes, clubs, metal rods, and other items that could be used in violent confrontations.
The individuals were taken into custody at Bungoma Police Station, where they are awaiting profiling, processing, and subsequent arraignment.
"All the suspects were taken to the police station and placed in custody, pending processing and arraignment," police said in a statement.
The operation is part of a wider security effort across Bungoma County amid concerns over potential interference in Kabuchai Ward, one of 22 areas holding by-elections nationwide.
Earlier in the week, police intervened to calm minor skirmishes reported in Kabuchai, Kanduyi, and Webuye East ahead of the poll.
Isolated incidents of tension have been reported as rival political supporters clashed in some wards.
Police stated that the recovered weapons could have been intended for use in confrontations designed to intimidate voters or disrupt the election process.
Similar security measures were reported in other counties, including Embu, Kakamega, and Murang’a, as voters participated in the 22 by-elections.
The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order throughout the electoral period.
“The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to serve and protect the public. We urge all citizens to exercise restraint, follow the law, and allow the democratic process to unfold without interference,” the statement read.
