Police in Nairobi shot and fatally wounded a suspected robber following a dramatic chase and standoff in the Kiamaiko area, an incident authorities say unfolded after a reported attempt to rob residents.

According to police, the suspect and several accomplices were allegedly targeting locals and taking cash and valuables before members of the public raised an alarm that set off a pursuit.

The alarm drew a crowd that began chasing the group, prompting officers on patrol in Mathare Area One to join the pursuit.

As the chase intensified, police said one of the suspects drew a pistol and fired into the air while attempting to escape during the Tuesday, November 25, 2025 incident.

Officers said the suspect then sought refuge in a nearby house, triggering a brief standoff as police ordered him out.

Police reported that during the confrontation, officers returned fire, fatally shooting the man as he took cover inside the house.

No other injuries were reported.

His body was later moved to the mortuary pending identification and a postmortem examination.

Officers at the scene recovered what they described as a pistol loaded with three rounds of ammunition, along with two mobile phones.

Police said the firearm would undergo ballistic testing to determine whether it had been used in any previous criminal activity.

The suspect’s accomplices managed to escape and are still being sought by authorities.

Nairobi Police Commander George Seda said the incident comes as police intensify operations in response to public concerns over rising crime ahead of the festive season.

He appealed for continued cooperation from the public, saying such assistance plays a crucial role in helping officers curb criminal activity.

“We urge the public to continue cooperating with the police in efforts to address these crimes. We have deployed more personnel to help in the efforts,” Seda said.

In a separate incident in Bungoma County, police arrested a man accused of fatally assaulting his wife, identified as 37-year-old Jacinta Naswa Wekesa, in Chebukwabi village, Kimilili.

Police said the woman succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment in hospital following the alleged assault.

According to authorities, the woman sustained severe head injuries during what was described as a domestic altercation.

Her body was moved to the mortuary for an autopsy as investigations continue. Police said the suspect was expected to appear in court to face murder charges.

Elsewhere in Mbita, Homa Bay County, a suspect was lynched by members of the public who accused him of theft.

Police reported that the suspect was stoned to death before his body was set on fire.

The remains were later moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

Officers condemned the mob attack, reiterating that lynching remains a criminal act regardless of allegations made against individuals.

They urged the public to hand over suspects to authorities for investigation and due process.

Police have previously raised concerns about an increase in such incidents, some of which they say involve individuals falsely accused before being attacked by mobs.
