The National Police Service (NPS) has assured Kenyans of its unwavering commitment to guaranteeing a peaceful, free, fair and credible electoral process during Thursday’s by-elections.

NPS promised impartiality and full adherence to the Constitution in the execution of its mandate.

In a statement released on Wednesday, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the service is working closely with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure the polls run smoothly, noting that adequate personnel have been mobilised to maintain order and secure polling centres across the affected regions.

“The public is assured that adequate security shall be deployed for the attainment of the set objective,” Nyaga said, emphasising that officers will operate professionally and without bias.

He reiterated that the police recognise the importance of vibrant political discourse in a democratic society but urged all political actors to conduct themselves within the confines of the law.

Nyaga cautioned leaders against issuing inciteful, hateful or defamatory remarks, noting that such utterances risk stoking tensions and undermining public confidence in key institutions.

“All political leaders are specifically called upon to desist from utterances that are inciteful to violence or bear hatred of whatever form. They should further refrain from making statements that could be interpreted as threatening or defamatory, or that undermine public confidence in our institutions,” he said.

He further appealed to political leaders and their campaign teams to fully cooperate with electoral officials to ensure a credible and accountable voting process.

Nyaga underscored that the police will apply the law uniformly to all individuals, regardless of status or political affiliation.

“In line with our mandate, the NPS states unequivocally that the law will be applied fairly and consistently to all individuals without fear, favour, prejudice or bias. Any person who, regardless of status or political standing, engages in or incites unlawful activity will face the full force of the law,” he said, adding that police will work closely with other criminal justice agencies to apprehend and prosecute offenders.

The NPS also called on citizens to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding as the by-elections proceed, assuring them that the necessary measures have been taken to protect their safety and allow them to go about their activities without fear.

“We are further counting on the cooperation of both the public and the political leaders to help build a safe and secure Kenya for all,” Nyaga.

He encouraged Kenyans to report any suspicious activities through the nearest police station or via emergency hotlines 999, 911, 112, or anonymously through #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000.

The National Police Service reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to upholding the Constitution and maintaining operational independence, impartiality and political neutrality as the country heads into the by-elections.
