Mbae said one Mulandi Mumbua, 46, was driving an unregistered motor vehicle with dealer number KD 2167, a HOWO lorry, from the Mombasa direction while using the wrong side of the road, blocking oncoming vehicles from Nairobi.

He collided head-on with a Mitsubishi FF matatu, registration number KCG 846A, driven by David Muli, 41, who was heading from Nairobi with 17 fare-paying passengers.

“After the accident, the matatu's driver, a 32-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man died on the spot, while 15 others sustained injuries of various nature,” Mbae told the Star by phone on Sunday.

The police boss said the injured were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment.

He said the three bodies were taken to the same hospital’s mortuary awaiting postmortem and identification.
