Drama erupted in Kabuchai on Saturday after a campaign rally attended by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya was disrupted, prompting residents to flee for safety.

The incident unfolded as Natembeya addressed locals at a trading centre while campaigning for MCA aspirant Eric Wekesa.

Moments into his speech, loud bangs believed to be from teargas canisters were heard, sending crowds scattering in different directions.

Natembeya was also forced to leave the venue as a precaution to avoid potential harm.

Witnesses said a group of individuals stormed the venue, throwing stones and attempting to break up the meeting.

In the ensuing chaos, a vehicle and house linked to a local politician said to be associated with Natembeya’s team were reportedly vandalised, with windows broken and property damaged.

No injuries were immediately reported following the incident.

Governor Natembeya condemned the events, describing them as a worrying sign of political intolerance. “Political violence should not be entertained,” he said.

He urged security agencies to act promptly and restore calm. “We cannot allow a few people to turn our democracy into a battleground," he said.

DAP-K, in a statement, linked the unrest to groups it claimed were associated with senior political figures.

The party alleged the disruption was intended to intimidate voters ahead of the local by-election.

"Governor George Natembeya and a host of leaders, while campaigning for MCA aspirant Eric Wekesa, were today confronted in Kabuchai," the party said in a statement.

The claims come amid heightened political tension in Bungoma County, where rival camps have traded accusations over influence and control.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the National Police Service have been urged to investigate the incident and ensure security for all aspirants ahead of the polls.

The polls are scheduled for November 27.
