Detectives are investigating an incident in which a seven-year-old girl died after falling into an open septic tank in Garissa Town.
The incident happened on Thursday afternoon in the Qorahey Market area, according to police.
The girl is reported to have wandered near the tank, which neighbours and police said had been left uncovered due to ongoing repairs, when she slipped and fell in.
Residents rushed to the scene and helped retrieve her.
Police said she had died by the time she was removed from the tank.
Officers moved the body to the mortuary for an autopsy as investigations continue.
Police are also examining claims that the tank had been left unattended and exposed.

In another incident in Othaya, Nyeri County, police are investigating the deaths of a couple in Kiandemi Village.
Officers said both individuals were found dead in their home, and preliminary findings suggest the woman died following an assault during a domestic dispute before the man died shortly afterward in circumstances police believe to be suicide.
The couple’s ten-year-old daughter was at home but was not harmed.
Both bodies were taken to the mortuary for autopsies as investigations continue.
