Former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala on Friday offered his condolences to the family of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga during a highly symbolic visit to Mama Ida Odinga.

In a gesture steeped in cultural meaning and traditional solidarity, Balala presented her with a camel—a gift often associated with honour, comfort, and deep respect in various pastoralist communities across Kenya.

Balala said he had visited to share in the grief of the family, describing Raila as a towering figure whose political journey reshaped the country and gave “a voice to the vulnerable and the marginalised.”

"Earlier today, I joined fellow Kenyans in mourning and offering my heartfelt condolences to Mama Ida Odinga following the passing of Raila Amolo Odinga. I also presented a camel as a traditional gesture of comfort and solidarity," he stated.

He noted that Raila’s leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement did not just build a political party but birthed a powerful movement that expanded democratic space and inspired the country to become what it is today.

The ex-CS urged Kenyans to reflect on Raila’s remarkable life and to carry forward his vision of a more democratic and inclusive nation.

He also expressed hope that his legacy would serve as an inspiration for future generations to lead with courage, integrity, and commitment to the common good.

"As we reflect on his remarkable life, let us carry forward his vision of a Kenya where every citizen is heard, respected, and empowered. May his example inspire future generations to serve with courage, compassion, and dedication to the common good," he said in a tribute.

The gift of a camel—rarely seen in political condolence gestures—is traditionally understood as a symbol of resilience, wealth, and long-lasting support.

The presentation of a camel serves as a sign of deep commitment to stand with a bereaved family, offering them strength during mourning and affirming the presence of a supportive community.

His visit added to the growing chorus of tributes from leaders across political divides, who have praised Raila’s decades-long struggle for multiparty democracy, equitable governance, and human rights.

Many have visited the family, presenting gifts such as cows, bulls, and now a camel, as a sign of solidarity and support.

Raila has been widely hailed as a statesman whose sacrifices—including years of detention without trial—helped lay the foundation for the freedoms and democratic institutions Kenyans enjoy today.
