DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday led a high-profile opposition team to
drum up support for Mbeere North’s candidate, accusing the government of using
intimidation and money to tilt the upcoming by-election.
Addressing worshippers in Kanyuambora, Gachagua claimed state-sponsored
violence had been unleashed on his supporters, alleging that goons were being
ferried to disrupt his events.
He further accused senior government officials of splurging cash in villages
to buy voters, insisting residents should resist what he termed as an attempt to
corrupt their democratic choice.
“A time will come when I will come and close those ‘hotels’, our people
cannot be bought,” Gachagua said.
The by-election has heightened political tensions in the region, with rival
camps trading accusations as voting day draws near.
Gachagua said the Mbeere North vote was crucial not just politically but
symbolically, arguing that victory would help restore the respect and dignity
of the Embu people.
He also cited Public Service Cabinet
Secretary Geoffrey Ruku and area Governor Cecily Mbarire.
“I have seen Ruku making noise everywhere. After sending
Ruto home you (Ruku) will be back here. Don’t allow Ruto and Mbarire to use you
and cause violence in Mbeere North,” Gachagua stated.
“You are dancing on the grave of your brother [Justin] Muturi who was
sacrificed for you to get the Cabinet slot.
Gachagua spoke during a church service at ACK Diocese
of Mbeere in Embu county.
He was joined by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K party boss
Eugene Wamalwa, DP leader Justin Muturi and Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji.
The united opposition is rallying behind DP’s Newton Karish
for the seat left vacant after Ruku was appointed to the Cabinet.
Karish is battling for the seat with UDA’s Leonard
Muriuki Muthende in the November 27 by-elecctions.
Kalonzo stated the Wiper party
will rally behind the joint opposition candidate, disclosing that he had to turn
down Wiper aspirants who wanted to go for the same seat.
“There are two people here who wanted the Wiper ticket but I
want to say that my candidate is Karish,” Kalonzo said.
Last week, Gachagua faulted Inspector General of Police Douglas
Kanja over what he termed as doing little to contain the violence targeting opposition in
the constituency.
“Despite the evidence and information in your custody, the
above persons have not been arraigned. We demand that ahead of the
by-elections, the above persons must be arrested immediately, arraigned and
charged under the penal code,” Gachagua stated in a letter to the police boss.
“Take note that I will be in Mbeere North constituency from
November 16, 2025 - November 24, 2025, to campaign for the candidate of my
choice in full exercise of my constitutional rights.”
