A housemaid has been arrested for allegedly stealing a safe containing a pistol, land title deeds, and Sh348,000 from her employer in Nairobi’s Kileleshwa area.

Police identified the suspect who is accused of the theft on November 3, 2025.

Detective Simon Ihaji from Kilimani Police Station told Kibera Magistrate’s Court that the suspect allegedly broke into her employer’s bedroom and stole a safe containing cash in US dollars, Euros, and Kenyan shillings, as well as other valuables, including a Glock 19 pistol and two magazines with 44 rounds of ammunition.

“The amount was 1,950 USD, Sh5,000, 600 Euros, and other valuables, including the firearm with the serial number attached,” Ihaji said.

Police said the stolen items were not recovered during the operation in Kawangware on Wednesday, and a search is ongoing. Authorities indicated that there may be other accomplices involved.

According to reports, the incident occurred in the evening when the employer and his family were away.

The suspect, who had reportedly worked for the family for over two years, could not be reached after the alleged theft. She was later traced to a hideout in Kawangware.

Principal Magistrate Margret Murage ordered that the suspect remain in police custody until November 24, 2025, stating, “The respondent will therefore be detained at Kilimani Police Station for seven days only, until the 24th of this month, and on this date, I expect a charge sheet to be ready.”

The house owner, who is a licensed firearm holder, told police that upon returning from errands, he discovered the safe missing from his bedroom wardrobe.

Security camera footage reportedly captured the suspect carrying the safe out of the house in a carton.

Guards on duty said they initially thought she had been sent somewhere.

Police confirmed that efforts to recover the firearm, cash, and other valuables are ongoing.
