The annual award continues to celebrate those whose work has transformed lives and strengthened communities across the country.
Since its launch in 2018, the Star Person of the Year Award has recognised people who have shaped conversations and brought meaningful change to Kenya. The award’s past winners reflect a diverse range of leadership, courage, and service.
In 2018, the honour was shared by two senior officials who were instrumental in public service, George Kinoti, then the Director of Criminal Investigations, and Noordin Haji, then the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Their selection came at a time when the justice system was undergoing major reforms, and their work represented accountability and the fight against crime and corruption.
The following year, 2019, celebrated multiple figures who made remarkable contributions in governance, justice, and economic stability. They included Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, renowned for his public interest litigation and advocacy for justice; Justice Mumbi Ngugi, recognised for her fearless rulings in high-profile corruption cases; and Patrick Njoroge, then Governor of the Central Bank, praised for his prudent economic leadership.
In 2020, health workers across the country were collectively named Star Persons of the Year for their tireless efforts in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Their recognition captured the nation’s gratitude for their bravery and dedication during a global crisis.
The 2021 title went to Wambui Nyutu, who was serving as Vice Chairperson of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission, for her work promoting peace and national unity.
In 2022, the award was presented to former IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati, who oversaw the 2022 General Election.
Celebrated marathoner Faith Kipyegon earned the 2023 title after an extraordinary year of record-breaking performances that inspired millions. Her achievements highlighted Kenya’s excellence on the global stage.
In 2024, the award went to the Gen Z movement, the young generation that played a leading role in civic activism against the 2024 Finance Bill. Their recognition reflected the growing voice and influence of youth in shaping the nation’s democratic discourse.
As nominations for the 2025 edition continue, Kenyans are being encouraged to recognise individuals whose consistent efforts have made Kenya, or their communities, better places to live and work.
Nominations are open online until November 30, after which votes will be tallied to identify the standout personality whose work has had the greatest impact this year.
The winner of the 2025 Star Person of the Year will be unveiled a few days before Christmas, continuing a tradition of honouring Kenyans whose dedication, integrity, and service inspire the nation.
