The Kenya School of Government (KSG) has cancelled a batch of certificates it says were never issued by the institution.
In a public notice released on Tuesday, the school declared that Certificates of Achievement bearing serial numbers MA 0251 to MA 1000 are invalid and should not be recognised under any circumstances.
According to the notice, the certificates in question were neither issued nor utilised by KSG for awarding any of its academic or professional training qualifications.
The institution said the serial numbers appear on documents that do not originate from the school and therefore cannot be used as proof of study or completion of any programme.
“Accordingly, these certificates are invalid and cannot be presented or recognised as evidence of any qualification issued by the school,” KSG stated.
It urged employers, public institutions, education regulators and the general public to disregard any certificate falling within the affected serial-number range.
The school did not indicate how the invalid certificates were discovered or whether any individuals have used them for employment or academic advancement.
It also did not clarify whether the certificates are already in circulation or how widespread the issue might be.
KSG is a state institution mandated to train, develop, and build the capacity of public servants so that government institutions deliver better services to citizens.
Its core mission is to strengthen leadership, management, and governance across the public sector through professional training, research, consultancy, and policy advisory services.
KSG offers a wide range of programmes designed to equip government officers with practical skills in public administration, strategic planning, financial management, human resource management, public policy formulation, devolution, and ethics.
It plays a central role in preparing newly recruited civil servants for duty and upgrading the competencies of serving officers as they rise through the ranks.
Certification is an important element of the school’s programmes.
Participants who complete short courses, executive training, specialised workshops, and diploma-level programmes receive certificates recognised within the public service.
These certifications often contribute to career progression, promotion, or deployment to new roles.
Some programmes, such as the Senior Management Course (SMC) and the Strategic Leadership Development Programme (SLDP), are mandatory for officers seeking higher responsibility in government.
KSG also collaborates with universities and international institutions to offer advanced certificates and joint programmes that further strengthen professional qualifications.
Through training, certification, research, and advisory services, KSG serves as a cornerstone of public sector excellence, shaping a more capable and accountable government workforce.
KSG was founded in 2012 following the enactment of the Kenya School of Government Act, 2012.
It was created as a successor to several older public administration training institutions, including Kenya Institute of Administration (KIA), Kenya Institute of Management Training (KIMT) and Government Training Institutes (GTIs) in regions such as Mombasa, Embu, Matuga and Baringo.
