The body of a teacher from PAG Manyuki Mixed Secondary School in Lugari Sub-County, who went missing on Monday, has been recovered from a river.
The late Simon Shange was discovered floating in the River Chekalini on Saturday morning by passers-by, who reported the find to local authorities after a five-day search.
The body was retrieved by Lumakanda DCI officers and transported to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.
Police said investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
Shange had been reported missing after leaving his home in the Milimani area to collect KCSE examination papers from the Lugari Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner’s office.
His wife, Salome Mukuna, said her husband left home at around 5.30 am to collect the examination papers but did not return.
"He left home at around 5.30 am to collect examination papers from the container at Lugari DCC office and deliver them to school," she said.
Mukuna added that residents had discovered his vehicle, which appeared to have been involved in a road accident at the Muge area, but Shange’s whereabouts remained unknown.
“We conducted searches in nearby hospitals and mortuaries but could not locate him until this morning when we received information that his body had been found in the river,” she said.
Earlier, Lugari Sub-County Police Commander Robert Kurgat said police officers had joined the family in searching for the teacher.
Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula, who visited the home of the deceased, called for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances leading to Shange’s death.
“We want the DCI officers to ensure that the circumstances of the principal’s death are fully investigated,” Savula said while addressing mourners during a burial service at Lumakanda on Saturday.
He expressed concern over the discovery of Shange’s vehicle at the accident scene and his body in the river.
Kakamega County Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) chairman Johnston Wabuti urged police to expedite investigations and provide clarity on the events surrounding the principal’s death.
Wabuti said understanding how the incident occurred is important to prevent further tragedies and support justice for the family.
