Opposition leaders led by Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper) and Rigathi Gachagua (DCP) are expected at the home of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Bondo to condole with the family.
The Wiper leader last week on Saturday called on Kenyans to join him in his trip to Bondo, describing the planned event as a cultural celebration of Raila's life.
The opposition's visit to Raila's home in Bondo will be the first major gathering by leaders opposed to President William Ruto’s administration at Raila’s gravesite since his burial on October 19.
Gachagua was a no-show at Raila’s state funeral held on Sunday, October 19, but posted a condolence message on his social media platforms after the death of ODM leader.
Leaders from across the country and the continent have been visiting Raila's Opoda farm in Bondo to mourn with the family and pay their last respects at Raila's grave at Kang'o ka Jaramogi.
Ruto to attend final day of UN Social Development Summit in Qatar
President William Ruto is in Doha, Qatar, for the third and last day of the United Nations Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2).
The summit has centred discussions on poverty reduction, decent work, and social inclusion, bringing together world leaders to chart a renewed global social agenda.
Ruto has since signed an agreement to send 13,000 Kenyans to Qatar for employment.
The Labour Mobility Programme aims to provide Kenyan youth with global skills and diverse work experiences, benefiting national development.
The agreement includes establishing a Qatari Visa Centre in
Nairobi by 2026 to streamline visa processes and ensure oversight.
This move is expected to ease and expedite the processing of employment visas, remove bureaucratic obstacles, and improve monitoring to shield Kenyan workers from exploitation by dishonest recruiters.
Parliament committee meets to address police housing challenges
National Assembly’s Committee on Administration and Internal Security will hold a meeting over the welfare of police officers (housing).
The meeting will be held at Bunge Towers from 9.30 am
Senior officials from the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, the National Police Service (NPS), and the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) will appear before the committee.
Kenyan police face housing problems, including a lack of government-built housing, poor living conditions in existing units, and an acute shortage of affordable rental options.
A 2018 policy shift moved the responsibility for housing to the State Department for Housing, with officers now receiving a housing allowance instead of government-provided residences, but this has led to challenges, particularly for those in remote areas.
Many officers are forced to share cramped quarters, which the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) notes contributes to stress, but some who have been instructed to leave police houses have nowhere else to go due to the shortage of rentals and what has been described as slashed allowances.
