A police officer was Monday morning shot and killed while at work at the Lokori Deputy County Commissioner’s office in Turkana County.
Police said the assailants grabbed his AK-47 rifle that was loaded with 30 bullets and escaped with it.
Constable Chrispine Ouma was shot in the head and died instantly following the attack.
The officer and a colleague were guarding an examination container at the DCC’s office in Lokori when the incident happened on November 3, 2025, at 4 am, police said.
The colleague reported that he heard a gunshot, and on checking, he realised Ouma was dead and his rifle missing.
The body was later removed from the scene to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures. Police said they are investigating the attack and robbery.
A 7.62mm bullet cartridge which is usually fired from a rifle was recovered at the scene, police said.
Police believe the killers were after the officer’s weapon. Efforts to recover it are ongoing, officials on the ground said.
Senior security
officials in the area visited the scene as part of the probe into the attack.
Parts of Turkana have been under constant attacks from armed men out of revenge or to steal animals or weapons.
The area has been experiencing cases of armed attacks amid efforts to address the menace. Multi agencies have since been deployed there to address the same.
The area is among those under Operation Maliza Uhalifu aimed at dealing with bandits.
The operation has managed to contain crime in the area and other counties amid persistence.
The operation targets Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru and Isiolo counties.
Besides retributive reaction, strategic investment and sustainable development have also taken a prominent place among the government’s planned crime control interventions for Kenya’s Northern frontier and the Kerio Valley belt.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the long-term vision is to empower the communities to actively take part in the war against animal rustling and undertake legitimate nation-building activities.
He said he plans to distribute subsidised agricultural inputs and extension services to area residents in a bid to revive farming activities as a source of livelihood.
Murkomen ordered fresh vetting for all National Police Reservists (NPRs) as part of efforts to bolster the operations. He said there are plans to distribute subsidized agricultural inputs and extension services to area residents in a bid to revive farming activities as a source of livelihood.
