President William Ruto greets religious leaders at the African Divine Church, Gamalenga, Vihiga county on November 2, 2025/PCSPresident William Ruto has announced the donation of an additional Sh50 million to support the construction of the African Divine Church (ADC) Cathedral, which is set to serve as the church’s headquarters.
Speaking on Sunday, November 2, 2025, during a service at the African Divine Church, Ruto said the project had grown significantly from its initial plan, prompting the government to increase its financial support.
"When I was here, you told me that you wanted to build a cathedral, which would be your headquarters. At that time, we were told that it was going to be a small church, so we gave out three million first, but you said that you wanted a bigger church, and you alone have raised almost Sh20 million," Ruto said.
He added that church leaders later approached him to request additional assistance.
"Your clergy came to my office and told me that the Sh3 million we had given was not enough, so you wanted an additional Sh50 million for it to be Sh80 million, and I agreed. And last week I sent Sh50 million," he said.
The President urged local leaders to also take part in supporting the completion of the project, saying the development of places of worship should be a shared responsibility.
He encouraged continued collaboration between government officials, community members, and the church to ensure the construction is completed successfully.
Ruto on Sunday joined hundreds of congregants for a church service in Vihiga County. The service was held at the African Divine Church, Gamalenga, in Vihiga County.
Ruto was accompanied by several leaders from the region, including CS Wycliffe Oparanya and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
The President has been in the Western region on a four-day development tour.
Before attending church service, Ruto inspected the construction of the Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Ruto announced that the national government has officially taken over the construction of the Kakamega Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The President said the government has allocated Sh2 billion for the completion of the project, which is expected to be finalised within ten months.
Ruto said the government will not only complete the construction but also upgrade the facility to a national referral hospital to serve the entire Western region.
“I have told my brother Governor Fernandes Barasa that because this is a big facility, he should leave it to me to complete so that the people of Kakamega can have access to a Level Six hospital,” Ruto said.
The Head of State emphasised that the hospital will be fully equipped with modern medical equipment, noting that the decision to elevate it to national referral status is aimed at expanding access to advanced healthcare services across Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and neighbouring counties.
He directed the contractor to employ an adequate number of young people to ensure the project’s timely completion and promote local job creation during the final construction phase.
Ruto commended former Governor Wycliffe Oparanya for initiating the project in 2016, describing it as a visionary step in improving healthcare in the region.
