A multi-agency security team has seized a major consignment of illegal brew in Kericho County, striking a significant blow against the trade.

The operation, spearheaded by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) in collaboration with the National Police Service and the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), took place in Kaplelartet Location, Sigowet Division.

During the raid, officers destroyed several brewing sites and confiscated approximately 50,000 litres of Kangara, 100 litres of Chang’aa, and 1,000 litres of molasses believed to be used in the production of the illicit brews.

NACADA Chief Executive Officer Anthony Omerikwa said the successful operation was part of the ongoing Rapid Results Initiative (RRI), a government-backed strategy to curb the production and sale of illicit alcohol.

“This is not an isolated event, but a clear statement of intent under the directive of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen,” Omerikwa said.

“Our Rapid Results Initiative is mobilising all government machinery to dismantle networks that produce and distribute these harmful substances.”

With schools closed for the holidays, Omerikwa cautioned that NACADA would intensify operations across the country to prevent young people from being exposed to substance abuse.

“Our children are home, and we cannot allow them to fall prey to the scourge of drug and alcohol abuse,” he said. “We are scaling up surveillance and enforcement from villages to urban centres to ensure those profiting from this trade are brought to book.”

The Kericho operation, in an area that has faced repeated challenges from illicit alcohol, is being viewed as a major success and a signal of heightened nationwide efforts to safeguard public health and safety.
