Four police officers have been arrested following the fatal shooting of their colleague, Constable Hassan Lolkidid, in what authorities are investigating as a case of mistaken identity in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County.
Constable Lolkidid was shot while responding to a reported incident at around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, police said.
He and five other officers, all attached to Mai Mahiu police station, had arrived at a scene where a group was allegedly offloading tyres.
According to police, the group fled upon the officers’ arrival, prompting the officers to open fire.
It was then discovered that Constable Lolkidid had been struck and was lying in a pool of blood.
He sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
All six officers present at the scene initially denied discharging their firearms.
Their weapons were subsequently confiscated for ballistic testing.
The lorry involved in the incident was towed to the police station pending investigation, and Constable Lolkidid’s body was taken to the mortuary for an autopsy.
Following ballistic tests, four officers were arrested after police said it was established that they were involved in the shooting.
They are expected to be charged with murder.
In a separate incident in Gilgil, Nakuru County, a police officer was seriously injured during an operation to arrest a suspect wanted for housebreaking.
Police said a team had responded to a tip-off and successfully apprehended the suspect.
The suspect reportedly drew a knife from his footwear and stabbed the officer in the left groin before fleeing.
The officer was taken to Gilgil Sub-County Hospital for treatment and remains under observation in stable condition. Authorities continue to pursue the suspect.
