Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has paid an emotional tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a visionary who dedicated his life to leading Kenya towards a just and dignified future.

Nyong’o who spoke when he joined a delegation of governors to the home Saturday said accepting Raila’s death remains an immense challenge for the nation.

“It is not easy to accept that Jakom has left us. It will be very difficult for us, but we must find courage in his words, that there is a promised land, and Kenya will get there,” he said.

Nyong’o likened Raila’s lifelong struggle to that of American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

He recalled Luther's final sermon in Memphis where he said, “I have seen the promised land, but I may not get there with you.”

“Before Raila left us, he reminded us of that promise, the dream of a better Kenya where every citizen enjoys dignity, equality, and opportunity,” Nyong’o said.

He said what remains is for the leaders to carry that responsibility, "knowing that where Kenya is today is not yet the promised land he envisioned.”

“It is now upon us to inherit that responsibility collectively. We must ensure that the common men and women of this nation can share in the gift of God to this nation, a good life and a dignified life, which we don’t yet have today," he stated.

The governor said Raila’s optimism and resilience should inspire Kenyans to continue the struggle for justice and inclusivity.

“Where Kenya is today is not the promised land, but through Raila’s eyes we saw it. He gave us faith that it exists, and it is attainable if we stay united and true to his ideals,” he said.

The delegation of governors was led by Council of Governors (CoG) chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi, who also hailed Raila’s enduring legacy in the country’s political and governance history.

“There is no way the story of devolution in Kenya can be told without Raila Odinga’s name appearing on nearly every page, given his unwavering fight for justice and equitable governance,” said Abdullahi.

The Council expressed deep solidarity with the Raila family, describing Raila’s passing as a moment of profound national sorrow and reflection on the values of democracy, equity, and service that he so passionately championed.

The leaders were received by Mama Ida, Raila Junior and other family members.
