A 16-year-old girl died after lightning struck in a village in Ogwedhi, Migori County.

The victim was a form two student at Kameji High School.

Police said she was struck by lightning in the Sagegi area as she left a farm. It was raining when the incident happened on October 22, 2025, in the evening, police said.

The girl was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

Such incidents are common in the area amid calls to install gadgets to contain them.

Officials say tens of people are killed in lightning strikes in different places in the country, which has raised the need for the gadgets to be installed to contain the menace.

Elsewhere, a police officer was shot and seriously injured when a group of gunmen attacked the Soradoru police post in Maralal, Samburu County.

The gunmen struck on Wednesday night as two police officers on duty manned a barrier there, opening fire.

This forced the officers to take cover amid gunshots,  which lasted over 20 minutes, police said.

It was then that one of the officers complained he had been shot in the right thigh.

The gunmen had by then withdrawn and escaped the scene. The motive of the attack was not immediately known.

But police suspect the gunmen’s accomplices were on a robbery spree then, and they were driving away with stolen animals.

The injured police officer was rushed to the hospital in a stable condition, police said.

Meanwhile, police are investigating an incident where gunmen wearing jungle military uniforms raided a private hospital in Kitui Town and robbed workers of cash and valuables.

It was established that six men wearing military uniforms had entered the said hospital through the main entrance but at the gate.

This is after they tied the security guard on duty and the cleaner and took all keys from the reception.

Police said the gang ransacked the ground and first floor and broke into the cashier's room, the Pharmacy, and the administrator's office.

In the process, they stole five mobile phones, one laptop, four bio scanners, two laptop chargers, and one laptop bag.

The thugs were armed with a hammer and a knife, witnesses said.

Police said they are looking for the gang for questioning.

The gang also seemed to have prior information on the facility, and police suspect an insider facilitated the raid on Wednesday morning.

No one was injured during the drama.
