Lightning strike kills police officer in Nakuru

A police officer was found dead after a lightning strike on a house in Majani Mingi area, Rongai, Nakuru County.

Police said the incident happened in Kapsaga area and the victim was identified as Constable Francis Somokwony Chesire, based at Muhoroni Rapid Deployment Unit.

He was off duty when the incident happened on October 3 night following heavy rains experienced in the area.

Preliminary findings indicated that the officer died after he was struck by lightning while sheltering from rainfall outside a house.

Police said a burnt-out TV antenna and cables were recovered at the scene.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other investigations.

Locals have been lobbying authorities to install gadgets to address the menace of lightning.

The area is among those that experience such incidents, hence the need to install the gadgets to harvest the lightning whenever it rains.

Elsewhere in Kerinkani area, Narok County, the body of a man was found on a footpath after a suspected murder.

Police said the deceased was positively identified as Robert Cheruiyot Tonui, 29.

Two wooden sticks with blood stains were found near the body.

The motive of the murder was not immediately established, police said of the October 4, 2025, incident as they moved the body to the mortuary pending autopsy.

No arrest has been made so far, police said.

Meanwhile, police in Sawagongo, Siaya County are investigating an incident where one Clare Ochieng, 36, whose body was found in her house.

The body had strangulation marks on her neck when it was discovered on Saturday, October 4, police said.

Police said they are looking for the husband of the woman who is missing after the murder. The police want to talk to him as part of the probe into the murder.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

In Laare, Meru County’s Kaelo area, one Dominic Mwongera, 20, was found dead on the roadside after suspected murder.

Police said the body of the man had visible injuries to the head, indicating he was hit.

Police added that they gathered that the man had been attacked after being accused of stealing miraa in the area.

His village mates threatened to attack the farm where the body was found for revenge, prompting police to intervene and calm the situation.

Police said they are investigating the murder.
