People’s Liberation Party (PLP)
leader Martha Karua is confident that she has a chance of winning the 2027
presidential elections, ascending to the top office.
Speaking during an interview with
Spice FM on Tuesday, Karua said she has already received the green light from
the PLP to seek the top seat.
The PLP is part of the United
Opposition coalition.
“I look ahead at the possibilities
ahead of me, and there is an election coming in 2027. Therefore, there is a
chance for me to be the Chief Executive Officer of Kenya aka President,” she
said.
“I have already declared and I have
been given the go-ahead by the People’s Liberation Party. My duty is to work
hard to market myself and the ideals of the PLP so that I become the flag
bearer and run for President.”
Karua said her focus is on the
future rather than missed political opportunities.
On the country’s economic situation,
the former Justice minister said addressing Kenya’s debt burden must begin with
improving governance.
“You cannot talk of public debt
without first talking of governance, because that is how we get there. To stop
or address debt, you need to improve governance. Everything rests on
governance,” she said.
Karua, who was former Prime Minister
Raila Odinga’s running mate in the 2022 presidential election, has recently
been engaging in political consultations with leaders under the United
Opposition banner.
Her nomination in 2022 was hailed as a progressive step towards gender
equality and inspired a new wave of female participation in politics.
In July, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said the opposition will
unveil a single presidential candidate in December to face President William
Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua said the opposition has agreed to set aside personal ambitions and
rally behind one candidate, who will be picked through consensus.
“Around December, we'll produce one candidate to face him,” Gachagua
announced.
He added that he is ready to support whoever is picked by the team.
“I have said if we pick Kalonzo Musyoka, we'll support him to the end; if it's Fred Matiang’i, Eugene Wamalwa, our sister Martha Karua, we’ll all unite behind that one candidate, and, if by God's grace they pick me nitakimbiza yeye sana," the DCP leader said.
Gachagua emphasised that unity within the opposition is non-negotiable,
warning that internal divisions would only help Ruto secure a second
term.
“We are clear in our mind that we cannot allow ourselves to be divided
because he will slip through,” he said.
He also praised the spirit of selflessness among opposition leaders, saying
none of them is obsessed with personal power.
"All of us are selfless. We’ll stick together to the end,” Gachagua
assured.
