Kwale County has joined the rest of the country in celebrating Mashujaa Day held at Tiribe Primary School Grounds in Mkongani Ward, Matuga sub-county with local leaders hailing Raila Odinga as an all-time national hero.

Mashujaa Day, also known as Heroes' Day, is a national day which is observed on 20 October as a public holiday to collectively honour all those who contributed towards the struggle for Kenya's independence, or positively contributed in the post-independence Kenya.

The event was led by Kwale County Governor Fatuma Achani and County Commissioner (CC) Stephen Orinde, who were joined by local leaders and hundreds of area residents.

Both the governor and the CC concluded by encouraging residents to uphold peace and unity, especially during this period of national mourning both terming the demise of former premier Raila Odinga as a ‘deeply painful and monumental loss’.

Local leaders said Raila's life stands as an example of the highest ideals of national unity, moral courage, unwavering integrity and profound compassion.

The fete was filled with patriotic speeches and recognition of local heroes who have made a difference in their communities.

The celebrations came at a time when the nation is mourning the passing of former Prime Minister and ODM Party Leader, Raila Amolo Odinga, who was laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

In her tribute, Governor Fatuma Achani hailed the late Raila as a national hero who played a critical role in shaping Kenya’s political and democratic landscape.

She described the former PM as an icon of democracy and an exceptional leader and defender of devolution and prayed for the repose of his soul.

Achani said the sacrifices of Kenya’s heroes and heroines should serve as an inspiration to current and future generations.

She said Raila was a PM at Kenya’s most challenging period 2007-2013 and pointed out his efforts in preserving the nation’s unity, becoming one of the foremost architects of the country’s stability.

“Raila Odinga will be remembered as a true champion of reform. He stood firm in the fight for multiparty democracy, the birth of the 2010 Constitution, and the establishment of devolved governments that have brought services and resources closer to the people,” she said.

Orinde also paid tribute to the former Prime Minister, while calling on residents to emulate the spirit of heroism by contributing positively to their communities.

“Heroes are not just found in history books. They are among us,  exemplified by those who dedicate themselves every day to improve the lives of others. Let us honour our heroes by striving with integrity, respecting the rule of law, and supporting development in our counties,” he noted.

He further urged young people to take advantage of opportunities being provided by both the county and national governments, especially in education, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Orinde said the sacrifices made by past heroes and heroines should be an inspiration for unity and collective efforts to improve Kenya.

Matuga MP Kassim Tandaza also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of honouring both national and local heroes, whose sacrifices and service continue to shape the future of the country.

The legislator described the late Raila Odinga as a beacon of courage and father of democracy and devolution, whose legacy would endure for generations.

He said the late Raila Odinga was one of Kenya's most influential and enduring political figures and leaves a significant political void.

Tandaza said Kenya should recognize and reward its heroes and heroines not only when they die, but should also when they are still alive.

“Mashujaa Day is not just about remembering the past, but a call to action. Each one of us has a role to play in building our nation. Whether you’re a teacher, a farmer, a youth leader or a public servant, your daily contribution matters,” he said.
