Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has paid a glowing tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, describing him as a fearless defender of peace, democracy, and human rights, whose legacy will remain etched in Kenya’s history forever.

Speaking during Raila’s funeral service held on Sunday at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Bondo, Siaya County, Uhuru said Raila dedicated his life to fighting for justice and equality for all Kenyans.

“Raila fought tirelessly for the people of Kenya,” Uhuru said. “Our country’s history will never be complete without mentioning Raila at the forefront.” The former President described Raila as a selfless leader who transcended tribal boundaries and devoted his life to uniting Kenyans.

“My brother and friend Raila was never tribal. He cared for and loved all Kenyans equally,” he said. “This is evident in the friendships he built across the country and beyond. He embraced everyone, regardless of their political or ethnic background.”

Uhuru noted that even in his final years, Raila remained a voice of reason and reconciliation, working tirelessly to bring Kenyans together across political divides.

“He has left us in body, but in our spirits and in the spirit of Kenya, he will live for years to come,” Uhuru added. The former President extended his condolences to Raila’s widow, Mama Ida Odinga, and their children — Rosemary, Junior, and Winnie — reassuring them of his continued support during this difficult period.

“To Mama Ida and the entire Odinga family, I offer my heartfelt condolences. Know that we stand with you,” he said.

Uhuru’s tribute drew emotional applause from mourners who had gathered to honour the veteran opposition leader, whose political career spanned more than four decades.

Also present at the ceremony was former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, a long-time ally and friend of Raila, who described him as a great African patriot and statesman.

“I have lost a brother, a true friend, and a confidant,” Obasanjo said. “Raila was not only a Kenyan leader but also a Pan-Africanist who believed in the unity and progress of the African continent.”

Obasanjo recalled their close friendship, marked by decades of collaboration on regional peace and democracy initiatives.

As thousands of mourners gathered under sombre skies in Bondo, the tributes from African leaders underscored Raila’s towering influence — a man remembered not only as a political giant but also as a symbol of resilience, unity, and hope for generations of Kenyans.
